On the need for catchment classification

چکیده

The rapid growth in our ability to generate new descriptions of catchment heterogeneity, using both experimental and modeling approaches, is now outstripping our ability to use the knowledge effectively in theory and practice. Studies in experimental catchments have identified the idiosyncrasies of many river basins, and produced very complex, yet highly qualitative descriptions of catchment behavior. However, the sporadic attempts to regionalize those studies have been of limited value, because of the difficulty in producing concise, easily understood explanations of different basin behaviors. In a similar way, the variety of simulation models has continued to grow as new data sources and computing resources have become available, and new processes have been included in models. Some models have very detailed representations of processes which are difficult to validate except in the most intensively instrumented sites, while other models are simpler and easier to parameterize, but harder to validate against observations at the appropriate spatial scale. No clear guidance is available on which model or model structure is appropriate to any particular catchment type or management question. As a result, model structures often seem to be ad hoc. Similarly, no clear guidance is available on which dominant processes and mechanisms are operating in a given catchment type. As a result, the way that we instrument catchments and seek process understanding often also seems to be ad hoc. We suggest that the underlying cause of many of our problems in catchment hydrology is the tremendous variability in space, time and process, which is present in natural hydrological systems all around the globe. It is enormously ambitious for

Using satellite imagery for the study of Earth's resources is attended by manyresearchers. In fact, the various phenomena have different spectral response inelectromagnetic radiation. One major application of satellite data is the classification ofland cover. In recent years, a number of classification algorithms have been developed forclassification of remote sensing data. استفاده از شاخص سیستم‌های دینامیک غیرخطی برای طبقه‌بندی هیدرولوژیکی حوزه‌های آبخیز

One of the challenges for hydrologists is finding a new method for hydrologic classification of catchments. An appropriate classification method can be effective in many branches of hydrologic science like modeling. To deal with the complexity and nonlinearity of hydrologic processes, some researchers have proposed using the chaos theory for catchment classification. In this research, possibili...

Application of Fuzzy Technique for Order-Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (FTOPSIS) to Prioritize Water Resource Development Economic Scenarios in Pishin Catchment

Water is a basic demand of sustainable development in most regions of the world. The non-uniform temporal and spatial distribution of water resources will lead to water shortage in arid and semi-arid areas. Pishin catchment is one of the most important catchments in South-East Iran. The basin had been faced with consecutive droughts in recent years. On the other hand, water resources developmen...

Simulation of Future Land Use Map of the Catchment Area, with the Integration of Cellular Automata and Markov Chain Models Based on Selection of the Best Classification Algorithm: A Case Study of Fakhrabad Basin of Mehriz, Yazd

INTRODUCTION Since the land use change affects many natural processes including soil erosion and sediment yield, floods and soil degradation and the chemical and physical properties of soil, so, different aspects of land use changes in the past and future should be considered particularly in the planning and decision-making. One of the most important applications of remote sensing is land ...

Catchment Classification and Hydrologic Similarity

Hydrology does not yet possess a generally agreed upon catchment classification system. Such a classification framework should provide a mapping of landscape form and hydro-climatic conditions on catchment function (including partition, storage, and release of water), while explicitly accounting for uncertainty and for variability at multiple temporal and spatial scales. This framework would pr...
